2/27/2020: Offbeat Magazine Reviews Mind Beach
Thanks to Robert Fontenot and Offbeat for this amazingly poetic review!
“The beach is not the first setting you think of when it comes to jazz, not even the smooth, folk-inspired kind offered up by double bassist Quinn Sternberg and his quartet. Yet a beach of the mind is exactly what they offer—quiet solitude that allows you to watch the world go by. Make no mistake: this is not “lite jazz” and it does not approach “yacht rock.” Like the beach, this is a complex microcosm, not just a womb of gentle white noise.
Keeping things largely acoustic—unlike his more traditional, more “cool” debut Weird World, the subtle tones of guitarist Chris Alford dominate rather than the piano—Quinn and his cohorts create a sound that can surprise you with its sudden complexity, if not quite ferocity. On postcards like “Homesick” and the title track, placidity gradually turns into mild chaos: Quinn and drummer Brad Webb’s rhythm section undercurrent roils, Alford’s guitar churns like storm clouds about to roll in, and Sam Taylor’s sax divebombs like hungry scavenger birds. The lone cover slows “Scarborough Fair” to a crawl in order to unspool all the anguish from the famous melancholy melody. And the last track, “Remnants,” ends with a sudden tape stop, as if someone suddenly remembered they’d left something urgent behind. You know, the way most uneasy vacations end.”

2/11/2020: Mind Beach Review by Sea of Tranquility:
Thanks to Jon Neudorf and Sea of Tranquility for the Mind Beach love!
“Bassist Quinn Sternberg leads a quartet based out of New Orleans. He released his first album Weird World in 2016 and on is new album tiled Mind Beach Quinn is joined by Sam Taylor (alto saxophone), Chris Alford (guitar) and Brad Webb (drums). The disc contains seven tracks, all original except for a cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Scarborough Fair”.
The first track “Homesick” has an easy flowing guitar and sax, propelled by Webb’s snare, leading into a superb sax solo. An acoustic bass solo follows suit, very smooth with great tone. The guitar work is also impressive with its subtle chord phrasings. Textured guitar chords and melodic sax highlight “Greener Pastures” showcasing more bass and sax solo spots. This band certainly has the chops along with some fine melodic moments. The title track has a chilled out vibe with the lyrical guitar and creative sax stylings standing out, especially when trading solos. Towards the end Webb’s tricky drum work is very impressive. The aforementioned “Scarborough Fair” opens with a solo bass figure followed by mournful saxophone carrying that familiar melody. I love how the guitar and sax intermingle, just a tremendous reworking of a ‘60s classic. The breezy “Remnants” is probably the most uplifting track, very nice indeed.
Sternberg and his band have put out an outstanding jazz album with Mind Beach. I will be digging this one for a long time to come.”

12/10/2019: Mind Beach Review by Midwest Record:
Thanks to Midwest Record for their review of Mind Beach!
“Nawlins by way of Indiana and IU, this rising bass ace makes jazz you can enjoy any way giving a modern take on straight ahead sounds not really tied to any location or genre. An advocate of Duke Ellington's dicta that there's only two kinds of music, and Sternberg knows only the good, jazzbo ears will enjoy this easy going treat. Solid stuff with everyone on board playing like they really want to be there and under his leadership.”

10/30/2019: Mind Beach Review by Culture Jazz
We got a nice review in from French Jazz website, Culture Jazz!
Via Google Translate:
”In our jazz galaxy there is a genre that we call "unclassifiable". In this genre, there is a category called "the improbable". There is nothing derogatory about it being clear. And coming to our ears by jumping over the Atlantic, this quartet, a bassist leader from the Midwest and three sizes from New Orleans, is one of them. Composed of solid individuals, it offers music throughout the CD that spawns with opposites without constraint. Always ready to unseat us, the four musicians know how to play with prejudices. Whether they tackle a rather folk / americana song or snort in avant-garde jazz, then, soon after in a simply melodic universe, they have this very particular art which obliges the listener to listen active. At the risk of missing something. If we were skeptical at first, we then let ourselves be taken in by this music born from a fusion / diffusion of genres quite original. When it comes to knowing what mind beach is, you're left to judge. "Doubt is the source of all greatness," is it not?”

8/27/2019: NEW ALBUM COMING THIS FALL!:
This October I’ll be releasing my second album! “Mind Beach” features new compositions that combine the folk melodies I grew up on in the Midwest with grooves and rhythms I’ve encountered in New Orleans. These two influences are woven together into an interactive Jazz experience brought to life by my new quartet.
